Classroom Activities

Grade / Task

First   

• Matching pitches with our singing voice

• Keeping a steady beat

• Playing reading and writing simple rhythms

• Identifying and playing classroom instruments

Second

• Matching pitches with our singing voices to include the pentatonic scale

• Expanding rhythm playing, chanting, reading, and writing

• Focusing on folk music and dance of four diverse cultures

• Reading solfege: do, re, mi

Third

• Matching pitches and intervals of the Major (and occasionally Minor) scales

• Introducing the use of music text books.

• Singing in two part harmony and rounds

• Reading simple rhythms and singing solfege in the music books

• Identifying basic forms AB, ABA

• Introducing the instruments and instrument families of the orchestra

• Creating complex rhythm patterns and pieces with Boom whackers

• Begin to learn about meter

• Studying and performing African Music and instruments

• Learning about American jazz from the blues through swing
