Parents

Dear Parents,

Welcome to sixth grade! We are looking forward to exciting and challenging experiences to make the most of your child’s education.

In order for your child to do his/her best we need to establish two-way communication so that you are well aware of all successes, areas of concern, and other news and events from the classroom teachers and the main office.

v      Please check your child’s agenda every evening to see if he/she has completed the assigned work and sign it to let us know that you have seen it. This will help keep your child on task. The agenda will alert you to daily assignments, as well as long-term projects and other reminders. Sometimes you will find a personal note from us in your child’s agenda. If your child is absent, he/she may call a classmate to get the homework or if you have internet access you can check our class website at www.budlongschool.com where homework assignments are posted daily.

v      When a major test is given, it is sent home, in order for you to monitor your child’s progress. Please sign the test and return it promptly. We then know that you have seen the test, and have discussed the results with your child.

v      Students are required to read 25 books for the year. That is 6-7 books per quarter. Your child should have 2 books with him/her at all times. Please see that your child is reading EVERYDAY for at least 40 minutes.

v      Please check your child’s supplies periodically. There will be a supply check each marking period. Many of you have bought all supplies, thank you!

6th Grade Expectations

1. Increasing the ability to FOCUS on the task at hand.

2. Developing LISTENING SKILLS. Students now learn to take dictation.

3. Taking RESPONSIBILITY. Learning to bring work and materials to and from home.

4. INDEPENDENCE and INITIATIVE to go beyond what is barely necessary.

5.    Completing work within an allotted TIME FRAME. This requires getting started immediately and staying on task.

6.    Learning to read and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. This will lead to becoming successful test takers.

7.    There is an INCREASED PACE in the 6th grade. Some students have difficulty at first, but all are expected to adjust. The pace increases with each following grade.

8.    HOMEWORK is to be done at assigned times. We expect 100% participation and cooperation. NO EXCEPTIONS!

9.    Because this can be a year of adjustments, we ask that parents not over-load their child with extra curricular activities at the start of the school year.

10.                       We also ask that parents allow students to have some home responsibilities to develop habits that can carry over into schoolwork.

11. If we exclude a student from a field trip, or some other special activity, it is to impress upon each child that there are consequences for not living up to their responsibilities.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION- We always welcome Parent Conferences. Just make a request for mornings between 8:15 am and 8:40 am or after school between 2:45 and 3:30pm. In between that we must devote our time to our classes.
