Assignments for March 2008
Announcements:

Grade 1
Students are listening to stories by Eric Carle. As a follow-up activity, the boys and girls will read information books and write reports about an insect.
Grade 2
Students are researching fairy tales and folk tales. They will read/listen to stories from the library in order to identify the country of origin; furthermore, the boys and girls will make a chart in order to compare and contrast the tales.
Grade 3
Students are researching cities in the United States. They are using the Internet to answer questions.
Grade 4
Students are researching famous women inventors. They will use the Internet in order to make a chart about the women's life, invention, and its purpose.
Grade 5
Students are to research a project on special effects, movie making, set design, script making, and more. The research is in conjunction with a period in history on a historical figure upon the students choosing.
Grade 6
Students are making a process diagram using a recipe from a country of their choice. Included in the background information are reasons for choosing this recipe and why this food is important to the culture. Afterwards, the class will cook the recipes and have a multi-media presentation. This presentation will occur April 1, 2008 at 3:30 during Tech Fair.
Grade 7
Students are reading the Shadow Children Series, "Among the Brave by Haddix. In conjunction with the novel, the students are working in groups to learn about different types of government, who should make and enforce the rules, self-preservation, and survival. The premise: a group is stranded on an island and what has to be established in order to survive, get-along, and exist with-in a particular framework.
Students in grades 1-7 are required to have at least 5-6 book reports/reviews per quarter. Students in grades 1-3 are learning about sequencing of events: first, next, then, last. Fourth graders have a multitude of choices for their reports. In grades 5,6,7 book reviews are the norm. Included: setting and characters.

| Rebecca Caudill Book Awards | Students in grades 4-8 have to read at least 3 books which have been nominated for the this prestigious award. By February 28, the participants have to vote for their favorite book. Then, the final tally is submitted to the Rebecca Caudill committee. |
| Monarch Book Awards | Studnets in grades K-3 have to read, or have been read to, at least 7 books which have been nominated for this award. By February 28, the participants have to vote for their favorite book. Next, the tally is submitted to the Morarch Award Committe. |
| National Geographic Explorer | This online magazine provides nonfiction articles for students in Grades 3-6, the type of which are often used to construct extended-response assessment items. |
| Battle of the Books | Grades 6,7,8 are participating in this activity. Certain books are read. In June, a designated team from each grade level will be be selected to enter this contest. |
